I can't remember the details but this site uses something called gravitar I think. It's an avatar you upload to one place and a bunch of sites can use it. I did it years ago though; sorry I couldn't be more helpful.

The flowing and messy nature of a sketch tricks the brain into perceiving depth, texture and motion.
With finished pieces the lines are far trickier to deal with. Line thickness and junction are very important; stylized images aside.
Then you have painters... man, painters. No idea how they do the thing.
