It's explained here. The souls of mortals can't be captured in normal gems (which can normally only trap animals and beasts). Black soul gems can trap mortals and are used by necromancers for necromancy stuff.

The joke is that he is using a regular soul gem, because he thought Katia was just a big cat.

woundedkneecap: Very uniform in style. I like how the fire is drawn as a set of defined shapes and angles. If I was to draw this, I would have drawn curvy fire shapes which wouldn't match this very angular and stylized appearance of Katia. It stands out and looks very well done. Also, Katia blep :P
